Yahoo! Messenger 8 Consumes Too Much CPU Power?
I have been experiencing a problem with my Yahoo! Messenger 8 in Windows XP SP2 in the last couple of days. My Yahoo! Messenger now requires too much CPU power as well as memory usage. See the screenshot below. As you can see here, Yahoo! Messenger eats 98% of my CPU power and 223 MB of my memory!!! Isn’t it crazy?
Unfortunately, I have no idea what I have done so that my Yahoo! Messenger is very hungry now…
After googling this problem, I have found some interesting links below:
- With the latest version of Yahoo messenger, why does CPU usage hit 90% and memory usage continually increase? - The suggestion is to switch back to Yahoo! Messenger 7.
- [Y!M] Re: Watch out for Yahoo Messenger eating up your CPU cycles! - The problem could be because of one of the Yahoo! plugins.
- Yahoo messenger.exe 100% cpu usage - Only a thread of discussion, no real solution yet.
Any other hints???

don’t think that is normal behaviour. i always have YM on, and on me it eats 50MB max, 30MB most of the time.

Seems that their programmer didn’t do any optimization?

@treespotter: Yes, I don’t think this is normal behaviour either. I have this experience in the last couple of days only. Before that, it was normal.
Now, I always switch of my Yahoo! Messenger…

I use YM8 now and so far it’s OK. Sometimes it does consume a lot of CPU resources but then I’ll just have to kill the process, and restart it. So far it’s OK.

I am a switcher … switch to YM7
YM8 comes with too much ad, and I see no advantages of connecting friends from MSN, since I can install nice-good-looking MSN Live Messenger (which I’ve hardly use anyway)

perhaps the problem source it’ss the plugins (as you have researched it).
i use YM8 without any plugins, it does consumes more memory than YM7, but tolerable

I had to switch back to 7.5 today to solve the problem. The cpu use would climb until yahoo stopped responding…would take about 10 minutes at the most. Slowed the computer down completely near the end. Very frustrating. I made sure NO plugins were installed or working..but didnt help.

@Tom: Me neither. I have uninstalled all the plugins, but didn’t help…

In the last several days, my YM consumes about 30% CPU constantly!
Strangely, I have 2 usernames, if I log in using my other username, the CPU usage is normal.
I tried to delete all settings and files and reinstall YM and try again. but still only username has the problem. Very strange.

Go into the plugins and delete music cast plug in..that is the culprit.

@Steven: Thanks for tip. I have uninstall YM and then re-install everything from scratch. Now my YM works fine. But good to know that music cast that causes this problem.
